For nearly three decades, Fred Coulas was one of the people who quietly helped keep the Etobicoke Old-Timers Hockey Association running.

Fred took over as the league’s Statistician following the 1983-84 season and maintained the EOHA statistics for an incredible 29 years. Long before websites, apps and automated standings, that meant keeping track of the numbers, updating the records and helping preserve the history of the league season after season.

It was a remarkable commitment to the EOHA and one that deserves to be remembered.

In recognition of Fred’s many years of service, the league’s regular-season scoring trophy has been renamed the Fred Coulas Award. It will be presented each season to the player who finishes as the EOHA’s leading scorer during the regular season.

Naming the award after Fred feels especially fitting. For so many years, he was the person responsible for tracking the very statistics that determined the league’s scoring leaders. Now, each year when the top scorer is recognized, Fred’s contribution to the EOHA will be recognized along with them.

The league has been fortunate to have many players and volunteers contribute to its success over more than four decades, and Fred’s 29 years of service stand among the most significant.

The Fred Coulas Award is a small way to make sure that contribution remains part of EOHA history for years to come.
